Genetic Diversity Analysis of Phenotypic Traits in Yacheng Series Sugarcane Parents

The Yacheng series represents a group of elite sugarcane parental lines in China, characterized by drought tolerance, resistance to multiple stresses, adaptability to poor soils, disease resistance, high photosynthetic efficiency, and strong genetic combining ability. Phenotypic trait evaluation remains the most direct method for investigating genetic diversity among sugarcane parents. This study aimed to elucidate the genetic relationships among Yacheng series parental lines and enhance their utilization in breeding programs. Morphological data for 35 phenotypic traits were collected from 138 Yacheng series parental lines and 15 major cultivated sugarcane varieties in China, followed by multivariate genetic analyses. The coefficient of variation for the Yacheng parental lines ranged from 10.41 to 60.19%, with Shannon’s information index (I) and Nei’s genetic diversity index (h) recorded at 0.787 and 0.452, respectively, both higher than those of the cultivated varieties. Considerable diversity was observed in leaf traits and post-exposure stem coloration. Genetic distance coefficients ranged from 0.014 to 0.457. Using a similarity coefficient threshold of 0.405, the 153 sugarcane parental lines were clustered into three distinct groups. The highest diversity index for Yacheng parental lines was noted in the 1990s. Cluster analysis based on genetic similarity further classified the materials into three groups, four subgroups, and seven subclasses, with the major cultivated varieties forming a separate cluster. These findings provide a theoretical basis for parental selection and hybrid combination design in sugarcane breeding, thereby contributing to improved breeding efficiency.
