Cytokinin and Gibberellin Interactions Control Organ Size and Shape in Adenium obesum (Forssk.) Roem. & Schult
摘要
Cytokinin (CK) and gibberellin (GA) are pivotal for the correct spatial-temporal development of plant tissues and organs. Considering the peculiar morphology of Adenium obesum (Forssk.) Roem & Schult (Apocynaceae), in this study, we evaluated how CK and GA determine the size and shape of the leaves and caudex of A. obesum. The application of the following treatments altered the balance of CK and GA: 100 µM 6-benzylaminopurine (cytokinin - CK); 100 µM gibberellic acid (GA); 100 µM paclobutrazol (PBZ); 50 µM CK + 50 µM GA (CK: GA); 50 µM CK + 50 µM PBZ (CK: PBZ). In the control treatment, no plant growth regulators were applied. After 30 days of daily applications, the growth, architecture, and morphoanatomy of leaves and stems were evaluated. Plants treated with GA showed a significant increase in height and enhanced longitudinal expansion length of leaves. The application of CK led to greater formation of axillary shoots, altering the architecture of the plants. Interestingly, when CK was associated with GA and PBZ, the size and shape of the leaves were also altered. While the application of GA induced the formation of lanceolate leaves with a smaller leaf area, plants treated with PBZ showed oval leaves with an increase in leaf area. Regarding the anatomical organization, the plant growth regulators promoted significant effects on the thickness of the leaf tissues and caudex. Plants treated with GA showed a significant reduction in leaf and stem thickness. Plants treated with CK and PBZ had significantly thicker organs. We believe that the results obtained in the present study will contribute to a greater understanding of how the balance between these plant hormones modulates the variation observed in the structure of leaves and the caudex of this important ornamental plant species.
