<p><i>Butia odorata</i> (Barb.Rodr.) Noblick and <i>Butia catarinensis</i> Noblick &amp; Lorenzi (Arecaceae) are ecologically and economically important palms but endangered to extinction in South America. The two palms can be distinguished mostly by their individual sizes, shape of spathes and fruit size and shape. The literature suggests that <i>B. odorata</i> has bigger and more rounded fruits than <i>B. catarinensis</i>. Aimed at understanding fruit size and shape variation, and fruit phenology and their implications for the conservation of both taxa, we sampled fruits in four sites, three natural remnants and one with spontaneous regeneration after introduction by humans, the latter being monitored for flower and fruiting phenology. We detected high phenotypic variation for fruit size for both taxa. <i>B. catarinensis</i> frequently but not always had more elongated and smaller fruits in comparison to <i>B. odorata</i>, which does not allow a complete differentiation between the two taxa based on fruit size and shape only, raising the question of whether they are distinct species or ecotypes of the same species, with possible hybrids between the two taxa. While genetic and environmental variances drive variation in fruit size for both taxa, the genetic component seems to be a major contributing factor. However, phenological variation reveals unequal fruit production over consecutive seasons, a factor that must drive attention to any management plan for the continuance of a sustainable harvesting system, for conservation and breeding of jelly palms.</p>
