Combined Supplementation OF Magnesium AND Boron Ameliorate Menopause-Associated Osteogenic Disturbances in Ovariectomized Rats

Due to a deficit of estrogen, menopausal women often suffer from osteoporosis, resulting in impaired productivity and quality of life. Although estrogen replacement therapy may alleviate osteoporosis associated with menopause, it can also have harmful effects. Magnesium aids bone mineralization, while boron supports bone structure. Thus, this work explored for the first time the impact of magnesium and boron on osteogenic markers in ovariectomized rats. Thirty adult female rats were equally distributed into five groups: sham-operated, ovariectomized, ovariectomized + magnesium, ovariectomized + boron, and ovariectomized + magnesium + boron. Bone health was also evaluated by measuring bone mineral density (BMD) as well as serum and bone contents of calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D, parathormone, and osteocalcin were also assessed along with bone alkaline phosphatase. Results indicated that ovariectomy significantly reduced BMD, serum and bone minerals, and serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels compared to Sham values. Additionally, it raised serum parathormone levels and bone turnover markers. However, all osteogenic parameters were markedly improved by individual and combined supplementation of rats with magnesium and boron. Notably, combining both minerals outperformed individual intake, implying their promising efficacy in maintaining bone health during menopause. Further large-scale research and clinical trials should be conducted to confirm the collaborative impact of magnesium and boron and determine safe and optimal doses and regimens.
