Biofabrication of Gold Nanoparticles Using Grewia tenax Stem Bark Extract and Assessment of Their Antimicrobial, Antioxidant, and Anticancer Properties

In this study, Grewia tenax stem bark extract was used to synthesized gold nanoparticles (Gt-AuNPs). The formed Gt-AuNPs were assessed by using UV-visible and FTIR spectroscopy, Zeta potential, TEM and BET surface area method. TEM analysis revealed that the Gt-AuNPs were predominantly spherical in shape, with an average diameter of approximately 13 nm. The antimicrobial activity of both the Grewia tenax extract and the synthesized Gt-AuNPs was evaluated against bacterial strains (Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis) and fungal species (Aspergillus niger, Penicillium chrysogenum). The results indicated that Gt-AuNPs have more significant antimicrobial potential than plant extracts. Antioxidant activities of Grewia tenax plant extract and Gt-AuNPs were evaluated against DPPH radical and they exhibited a significant radical scavenging capacity in concentration dependent manner. The anticancer activities were screened through MTT Cell Proliferation Assay and the results revealed that Gt-AuNPs have strong cytotoxicity against breast cancer cells (MCF7 cell line), lung cancer cells (A549 cell line), and cervical cancer cells (HeLa cell lines) with IC50 value of 61.14, 60.50 and 79.60 µg/mL, respectively. Overall, Gt-AuNPs revealed a multifunctional nature that can be explored for diverse biomedical applications.
