Driving digital transformation: unveiling the roadblocks for smes’ success in India

In today’s volatile and changing environment employment, innovation, and economic growth are basic characteristics of small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) is used to investigate the challenges and enablers of digitalization in SMEs. Expert responses provide numerical weights to 6 barriers and 5 alternatives using Super Decisions v3.2 software. The results show that the two most significant obstacles are the financial (0.44) and the resistance to change (0.24). Awareness-education (0.48) and administrative support (0.34) are the top alternatives to address these challenges. The AHP model had a consistency ratio of 0.07, which confirmed the consistency of the expert’s response. The digital transformation cannot be successful merely with access to technology only, but needs financial availability, focused leadership, and skilled workforce. This study offers a way into the digital environment by quantifying the multifaceted interplay that exists between the financial, technological, and human aspects to policy makers and SME leaders. The findings can serve as a guidance for the government, corporations, and SMEs. To achieve data-driven roadmap for sustainable digitalization, focus needs to be shifted on providing training, finance, and organizational structures.
