Preparation and characterization of waterborne polyurethane acrylate semi-interpenetrating polymer networks modified with nanoclays

The primary aim of this work is to study the effect of organo-modified nanoclay on properties of waterborne polyurethane/acrylate (WPUA) dispersions and thin films. To achieve this, WPUA dispersions with two acrylic contents (15 and 30 wt%) were first prepared using two methods: reverse emulsion polymerization and semi-interpenetrating networks (sIPN). The dispersions were characterized to determine the optimal synthesis method. The results indicated that the particle size distribution of the dispersions was unimodal, with the sIPN method producing a smaller average particle size. Various amounts of nanoclay were then utilized to synthesize WPUA nanodispersions with the sIPN method. In the next step, thin films were cast from the dispersions to study the structural, mechanical, and thermal properties. The results revealed that the polymer chains were intercalated into the organoclay layers and the addition of the nanofiller up to 2 wt% enhanced both mechanical properties and thermal stability of the films. This study demonstrated promising results for the development of waterborne dispersions for potential coating applications.
