<p>Eggs are a staple ingredient in many cuisines and culinary products worldwide but eggshell often generate substantial waste. Hence, effectively managing this waste presents a significant challenge, despite eggshell being rich in valuable minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and potassium. Recent advancements highlight the potential of eggshells as a source of calcium carbonate for enhancing the properties of packaging material. Food packaging is essential for preserving food quality, increasing shelf-life, and minimizing losses during distribution and storage. The utilization of eggshell as a natural filler and coupling agent has been shown to improve the mechanical strength, barrier properties, and overall quality of packaging material. Additionally, their uses in packaging highlight advantages including biodegradability, sustainability, and the development of suitable film properties that can serve as alternatives to traditional synthetic polymers. Thus, eggshell presents a promising choice for sustainable packaging solutions. This review critically analyses the conversion of eggshell waste into polymer composites and biodegradable packaging films, with a focus on improvements in mechanical, thermal, and barrier properties. The study investigates innovative uses of materials derived from eggshells in active and intelligent packaging and identifies limitations in the methodologies currently used for waste valorization. Moreover, our approach helps to address global sustainability goals by encouraging food systems to adopt circular economy methods.</p>
