<p>The increasing concern of fossil fuel-based plastic demands a shift of our focus to biopolymer-based packaging. Protein is a suitable material for producing edible packaging materials. There are different kinds of natural resources of proteins, including gluten, whey protein, zein, gelatin, and soy protein and they are suitable for eco-friendly packaging solutions. The film forming properties and compatibility of protein are advantageous but the mechanical, water resistant, and barrier properties are inferior to the conventional plastics. Incorporation of cross-linker, plasticizers, other polymers, and active ingredients could be useful to improve this limitation. Recently, there is trends in protein-based edible packaging and its application in food preservation. Meat is one of the highly perishable food and reports on protein-based coating and film on meat preservation is promising. The use of protein-based packaging on meat preservation is discussed in this review. Meat shelf life can be effectively increased by applying different kinds of protein-based packaging. On the other hand, the freshness of meat can be checked by utilizing protein-based intelligent packaging sensor. Even though there is a lot of promise nevertheless, more progress and improvement are required for further large-scale application of protein-based packaging in meat preservation and quality monitoring purpose.</p>
