A Review on the Food-Based Applications of Nanometric Plant-Based Essential Oils: Nanoencapsulation and Nanoemulsion Production Challenges

Utilizing plant-based essential oils (PEOs) nanoencapsulation for food preservation is an inventive technique in the food industry. It has attracted a lot of attention due to its ability to improve the stability, solubility, and bioactivity of PEOs. These characteristics are essential for PEOs’ employment in providing food safety. Nanoemulsion encapsulation of PEOs suggests specific advantages over other encapsulation techniques. This technique enhances stability, bioavailability, and release control while lowering emulsifier needs, which makes it an appropriate option for PEOs’ encapsulation in food industries. Unlike some review papers on essential oils encapsulation published in the literature, this review aims to focus on the PEO nanoemulsions production challenges. Addressing these challenges will advance the practical application of essential oil nanoemulsions. This work describes the inventive approaches and most typical factors affecting PEOs’ nanoemulsion in food applications. Various techniques are introduced to improve the stability, bioavailability, and efficacy of PEOs and the quality and longevity of the product.
