<p>The urgency is well documented: Climate change, the biodiversity crisis and other environmental problems are not only leading to economic damage on an ever-increasing scale—the population is also directly affected by their impacts on health and the living environment. Clear decisions and effective measures are needed immediately. However, the interdependencies are often global, complex and challenging to prove and, therefore, the effects of measures can only be predicted with great uncertainty. Public debates and political actors need reliable data and methods more than ever. This is the only way to achieve the necessary actions.</p><p>This article describes the current state of knowledge and central methods in five key areas of this research field. How can the benefits of ecosystem services for humans be quantified? How do environmental factors affect health? What influences the awareness and acceptance of environmental measures? How can ways to mitigate climate change be developed and evaluated based on evidence? And what data need to be collected and linked to answer these questions?</p><p>With expertise from various fields of environmental statistics, such as environmental epidemiology, environmental behaviour, ecosystems and climate change, this article provides the scientific context for current developments and urgent decisions. Relevant evidence for the public discourse and political opinion forming is based on reliable data and efficient statistical methods. There is certainly a&#xa0;need and potential for improvement here. Therefore, three demands for policymakers finally condense urgent needs arising from environmental statistics research that can only be implemented with the help of government regulations.</p>
