Changes in land-cover patterns in the Huizache–Caimanero Coastal Lagoon System from 1990 to 2020

The Huizache-Caimanero Lagoon System is recognized as a wetland of international importance since it provides habitat for thousands of migratory birds along the Pacific Flyway and was the most productive coastal lagoon in the Mexican Pacific. We analyzed changes in vegetation cover by using the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI Index) and land use classifications of 23 Landsat images from 1990 to 2020. We found that more than 85% of the analyzed area corresponded to crops in 2020, with a 20% increase in agricultural area (from 70,782 ha to 98,393 ha), a 78% reduction in mangroves (from 2,505 ha to 543 ha), and an estimated loss of 17,970 ha of natural vegetation in the basins that discharge into the lagoon system. The results of this study contribute to a deeper understanding of the changes that have occurred in the Huizache–Caimanero Lagoon System during the last 30 years as a consequence of intensified anthropogenic activities. This information provides support for the development of management and territorial plans for the area. Next steps will include an evaluation of multidisciplinary intervention proposals to restore the hydrological and ecological functionality of the system.
