<p>Coastal tourist destinations, while showcasing stunning natural beauty, often present unpredictable extreme natural events. Hazards are inherent in coastal tourism areas, but their consequences can be minimized through the incorporation of risk reduction into tourism planning. This paper investigated the preparedness of tourism in the institutional landscape in facing the tsunami hazard in the coastal region of Bantul, Indonesia. Using a qualitative research design, several themes were explored to gain insights into the evaluation of preparedness, ranging from risk perception, views on the importance of tourism preparedness, preparedness strategies, obstacles, and collaborative practices. The collection of data involved in-depth interviews with key informants representing various stakeholders, such as disaster management authorities, tourism management authorities, and tourism operators. Findings indicated that stakeholders acknowledged the tsunami hazard in Bantul, with the majority emphasizing the importance of preparedness planning. The preparedness strategies were mainly carried out by the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) and the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), covering various aspects from hazard mapping, development of early warning systems, determining evacuation sites and routes, contingency plan development, and various capacity building initiatives. The Tourism Office (Dispar) played a supportive role, while the involvement of tourism businesses was extremely limited. Some obstacles encountered were linked to the dynamics of at-risk populations that are difficult to control, financial constraints, inadequate coordination among stakeholders, and lack of participation from tourism operators. Despite stakeholders’ high awareness of tsunami risks, the study’s implication underscores the necessity for collaborative governance approaches to enhance preparedness efforts.</p>
