Study on the Effect of the New Collector KDB-3 on the Enhanced Recovery of Gold from Cyanide Tailings

This work investigated the process mineralogical characteristics of cyanide tailings from Guizhou, China. An efficient flotation collector, KDB-3, was adopted to enhance gold recovery from cyanide tailings. Process mineralogical studies show that gold with grade 0.96 g/ton in cyanide tailings is mainly carried by pyrite and coconut shell charcoal (CSC). In addition, gold is mainly concentrated in the particle size range of 0.074–0.010 mm. The single-factor flotation test shows that the optimal flotation conditions are as follows: the sodium carbonate dosage is 2000 g/ton, the copper sulfate dosage is 240 g/ton, the collector KDB-3 dosage is 120 g/ton, and of the No. 2 oil dosage is 40 g/ton. A gold concentrate with a gold grade of 20.40 g/ton and 72.83% recovery was finally obtained by flotation closed circuit test. Mechanistic studies show that hydrophobicity is significantly improved after the collector KDB-3 acts on the surfaces of pyrite and CSC; the contact angles increase by 8.28° and 6.79°, respectively, compared with the traditional ethyl xanthate (EX) and ammonium dibutyl (AD). Infrared spectroscopy analysis shows that KDB-3 exhibits greater affinity for the pyrite and CSC surfaces.
