Post-Weld Defects and Quality Assessment of Electron Beam-Welded HY 282 High-Temperature Alloy: A Novel Perspective
摘要
Electron beam welding (EBW) of HY 282 alloy was investigated, and the post-weld quality was evaluated, which is rarely reported in the literature. Weld defect inspection is significantly correlated with the weld quality. It was examined through visual tests, tensile tests, residual stress analysis, elementary mapping for oxygen (O2) entrapment, and Raman spectroscopy for hydrogen (H2) detection. Internal cracks and porosity of the fusion zone were assessed through non-destructive tests. In the present study, an experimental framework was proposed for a novel combination of electron beam welding for HY 282 high-temperature alloy, which possesses substantial results for promising strength and crack-free welding. The strength of the weld was found to be about 5% higher compared to that of the base metal (800 ± 5 MPa). All the tensile samples were broken from the base metal part, which confirmed its superior weld strength. Furthermore, the welds were free from cracks, porosity, insufficient fluidity, oxygen, and hydrogen entrapment, which represents the better quality of weldments. The residual stresses were largely mitigated after employing EBW. Finally, based on these findings, EBW was recommended for HY 282 alloy to ensure its high quality, defect-free weld, and maximum strength.
