Obstruktive Schlafapnoe und Inflammation

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) elicits a state of low grade inflammation that is triggered by the intermittent hypoxia (IH) induced by nocturnal apneas. This could for instance be shown by measurements of proinflammatory biomarkers in the blood of OSA patients and by cell culture and animal models of OSA/IH. The OSA-associated inflammation manifests itself in various tissues and organs (e.g. vasculature, central nervous system, visceral adipose tissue, airways, and lungs) and is probably an important pathophysiological mechanism for the adverse health effects of OSA (i.e. cardiometabolic diseases and neurocognitive dysfunction). Treatment of OSA by continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) can suppress the above-mentioned inflammatory reaction. Future treatment options within this context might also include anti-inflammatory drugs such as statins or GLP-1-agonists.
