Phase-coded waveform design for nonlinear tag detection in harmonic radar systems

This study investigates the detection of nonlinear tags using harmonic radar with phase-coded waveforms such as polyphase P1, P2, P3 and P4 codes. A phase modulation method, where the phase variation rate of the codes is modified based on the harmonic signal to be detected, is proposed and its performance assessment is done. A Schottky diode, a BJT transistor, and a diode limiter circuit are studied as nonlinear tags. The signal of interest is down converted to base-band at harmonic frequencies, and the waveform characteristic is stored to model matched filter coefficients for the nonlinear tag in use. The results present a significant increase in the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) compared to traditional poly-phase radar codes. This approach enables the achievement of signal processing gains close to ideal phase-coded radar waveforms.
