Polymorphism and changes of seasonal abundance of Hippodamia variegata (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) in the Sarakhs region of Iran
摘要
This study explores color polymorphism in Hippodamia variegata (Goeze) in the Sarakhs region of Iran (36.5372° N, 61.1561° E). Sampling was conducted weekly from March to July in 2021 and 2022 at 17 locations in Sarakhs and its surroundings. Specimens were collected from trees, shrubs, and crop stands using sweep nets and beating trays. A total of 297 samples of H. variegata were collected in 2021 and 182 samples in 2022. Female numbers were higher than male numbers in both years. Color morphs were classified based on the number and placement of elytral spots and the pronotal pattern. A total of 22 distinct morphs were documented. Peak male and female abundances occurred on April 30 and May 21 in 2021, and on April 8 and May 1 in 2022, respectively. Average temperatures at the time of peaks in male abundance ranged from 28 °C to 33 °C in both years, while female peaks coincided with temperatures around 35 °C. This is the first study of its kind in the Sarakhs region of Iran and provides a basis for further ecological research on Coccinellidae family.
