<p>B-chromosomes (additional, supernumerary, etc.) are not part of the normal genome. Even today, they remain a mystery to science, and their functions and origins are the subject of intense investigation by many researchers. This article presents, for the first time, data from observations of the B-chromosomes of the <i>Chironomus</i> population from a large reservoir. During 2013–2024, 1,803 larvae of <i>Chironomus plumosus</i> L., 1758 from the Rybinsk reservoir were studied. For the first time, B-chromosomes with well-defined banding structure have been found in this species. The frequency of occurrence of B-chromosomes was 4.8% on average, and reached 29% in some cases. They have ectopic contacts with all A-chromosomes. Seasonal variations have not been observed. Differences in the frequency of individuals with B-chromosomes were found at different sites of the study, as in the study of subpopulations. B-chromosomes are involved in the selection of individuals with specific combinations of chromosome banding sequences that have low adaptive significance in the Rybinsk reservoir. As a result, larvae with B-chromosomes are more sensitive to anoxia. This is probably the reason for the fluctuation in the frequency of individuals with B-chromosomes during the study period. Their numbers increase during periods of stability and decrease when habitat conditions change drastically.&#xa0;</p>
