Microbiota profiling in Arvicola amphibius: key findings on gut bacteria in a plant-based diet

Microbiota is formed through the colonisation of microorganisms passed from the mother during birth and acquired from the external environment in various ways. In recent years, studies have demonstrated the critical role of the microbiota in maintaining the general health of the host. A deficiency or excess of certain bacterial groups may contribute to various diseases, particularly autoimmune disorders and obesity, and treatment approaches could potentially be improved by rebalancing the microbiota. Within the scope of this study, the aim was to determine the intestinal microbiota of individuals belonging to the water vole (Arvicola amphibius) species, whose diet consists largely of reeds rich in cellulose. In this context, faecal samples were collected from the intestines of three A. amphibius individuals captured in Ankara, Türkiye, and analysed using faecal microbiota sequencing. The number of operational taxonomic units identified across the three samples was determined, with members of the Firmicutes (avg. 43%) and Bacteroidota (avg. 49%) phyla extensively represented. These findings highlight the influence of a plant-based diet on microbial composition, particularly the prevalence of Bacteroides and Prevotella. We hypothesise that isolates from this microbiota could modulate the Firmicutes-to-Bacteroidota ratio, enhancing digestive processes and immune responses. Additionally, these cellulose-degrading bacteria hold promise as candidates for the development of functional microorganisms, offering potential therapeutic and biotechnological applications.
