Objective <p>To investigate the effects of Neigong Tuina (Chinese therapeutic massage) and Liu Zi Jue (Six Healing Sounds) practice on the quality of life (QOL), exercise tolerance, and pulmonary function in patients with stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).</p> Methods <p>A total of 216 patients with stable COPD were allocated to a routine treatment group, a Neigong Tuina group, and a Liu Zi Jue group using the random number table method. The routine treatment group was offered routine Western medication; the Neigong Tuina group received additional Neigong Tuina treatment based on the routine treatment group’s intervention, and Liu Zi Jue group additionally practiced Liu Zi Jue. The intervention lasted 8 weeks in each group. The three groups were compared with each other in terms of QOL, exercise tolerance, and pulmonary function before treatment and after 4 and 8 weeks of treatment.</p> Results <p>All three intervention methods demonstrated improvements in the COPD assessment test (CAT) and 6-minute walk test (6MWT); after 4 and 8 weeks of treatment, the Neigong Tuina group and Liu Zi Jue group presented more notable improvements in CAT and 6MWT than the routine treatment group (<i>P</i>&lt;0.05), while the former two groups showed no significant differences (<i>P</i>&gt;0.05). After 8 weeks of treatment, two of the pulmonary function indicators, the forced vital capacity (FVC) and forced expiratory volume in the first second in percent predicted value (FEV1%), improved in all three groups compared to the baseline (<i>P</i>&lt;0.05) and presented insignificant between-group differences (<i>P</i>&gt;0.05). After treatment, the forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV1) to FVC ratio (FEV1/FVC) remained at the same level in each group (<i>P</i>&gt;0.05), and the between-group differences were also statistically insignificant (<i>P</i>&gt;0.05).</p> Conclusion <p>As add-on therapies to routine Western medication, either Neigong Tuina or Liu Zi Jue practice can result in more significant improvements in the QOL and exercise tolerance compared to routine Western medication alone in treating patients with stable COPD.</p>
