Recent advancements in Multi-Layer edible packaging: techniques, properties, and applications for food preservation
摘要
Multi-layer edible packaging plays a crucial role in preserving food quality and safety during transportation and storage. Made from natural, safe ingredients, it caters to consumer demand for healthier, sustainable food options. Single-layer edible films, however, often lack the required mechanical strength and water resistance. Multi-layer systems address these issues by combining different functional layers, improving performance. These layers can serve specific purposes such as light blocking, pH indication, and antibacterial activity. Additives in each layer enhance properties like moisture resistance and antimicrobial protection, tailored to different food types. This approach outperforms single-layer systems by offering a more robust and versatile solution. The review emphasizes the potential of multi-layer edible packaging for extended food preservation. Future research should focus on developing smart, dual-function packaging that can act as a spoilage indicator while maintaining food safety and quality. Multi-layer edible films and coatings could revolutionize food storage, benefiting both consumers and the food industry.
