Optimized microwave-assisted extraction of phytochemicals from carrot peels using neoteric eutectic solvents: A comparative study

Phytochemicals (phytonutrients) are bioactive compounds in plant-based foods that demonstrate potential in preventing chronic diseases, including cancer, heart disease and hyper tension. Various conventional and non-conventional extraction methods exist for isolating these valuable compounds. This study investigated the extraction of phytochemicals from carrot peels (Daucus carota) using microwave-assisted extraction (MAE), a sustainable and efficient non-conventional technique. MAE offers advantages such as increased sample throughput, reduced solvent consumption, and shorter extraction times. Traditional solvents like methanol and ethanol, while effective, pose environmental concerns due to their flammability, toxicity, and potential for pollution. Therefore, this research explores the use of neoteric eutectic solvents (NES), such as glycerol and choline chloride, as greener alternatives. A comparative analysis of MAE using NES and conventional solvents was conducted to determine the extraction efficiency and phytochemical composition of carrot peels. The study examined the effects of extraction temperature, time, and microwave power on the extraction process. Optimal extraction conditions for NES and ethanol were experimentally determined. And further optimization using response surface methodology (RSM) yielded optimal MAE conditions of 51.38 °C, 158.51 W, and 17.59 min for NES, and 60 °C, 350 W, and 20 min for ethanol.
