摘要

The increasing specialization in orthopedics and trauma surgery is placing new demands on continuing medical education. Shoulder and elbow surgery in particular is evolving rapidly, and current clinical realities as well as patient expectations require a level of expertise that existing continuing medical education structures only partially address. The D‑A-CH Association for Shoulder and Elbow Surgery (DVSE) responded early to this development and established a two-tier continuing education curriculum that is recognized both nationally and internationally. The SECEC based the introduction of its European certificate on this curriculum, thereby establishing the DVSE in a leading role within Europe. This article discusses the current situation, the significance of professional society certifications, and the need to incorporate specialization into continuing education regulations in the future, for example, in the form of a subspecialty in shoulder and elbow surgery.
