Failure Analysis of Shaft for Water Pumping Using Abbott–Firestone Curve
摘要
This study presents a comprehensive failure analysis of locally manufactured water pump shafts, integrating finite element analysis (FEA) with detailed experimental investigations. The objective is to determine the root cause of premature shaft failure and propose design modifications based on the findings. The analysis reveals that high-stress concentrations near the bearing-contact area, in combination with inadequate material properties and improper surface finishing, contribute to fatigue failure. Experimental validation using fractographic analysis, mechanical testing, and residual stress measurements supports the FEA predictions. The findings emphasize the necessity for improved material selection, surface finishing techniques, and optimized shaft geometry to enhance operational lifespan and prevent future failures.
