Resource Recovery and Utilization of Water Treatment Sludge

Water treatment sludge (WTS), containing organic matter, heavy metals, pathogens, and other harmful components, has become a significant environmental concern due to its increasing production. Traditional disposal methods such as landfilling and incineration are no longer sustainable, necessitating the development of large-scale and efficient resource recovery technologies to address the cumulative pollution problem. This study systematically analyzed 413 relevant articles published between 2004 and 2024, retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection (WOSCC), using bibliometric analysis to evaluate the current state of research on WTS resource recovery and predict future trends. The findings comprehensively address the following key aspects: (1) temporal trends and typological distribution of publications on WTS resource recovery; (2) detailed analysis of countries, institutions, journals, and disciplines involved, revealing the research landscape in this field; and (3) identification of development trends and key research areas. The analysis reveals that China leads in research output, accounting for 69.2% of global publications, and that interdisciplinary integration is driving advances in high-value product development such as biochar and catalysts, alongside growing emphasis on environmental risk control and regionally adapted strategies.
