Superhydrophobic/Superoleophilic Oil Absorbing Flame-Retardant and Photothermally Active Biochar-Based Polyurethane Sponge
摘要
Oil adsorbents for mitigating oil spills and for industrial oil-water separation applications are in demand. MTMS-coated biochar-based PU sponge (MTMS-C-PU) is prepared using commercially available polyurethane (PU) sponge, soya chunk biochar (SCB) powder, and methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS). MTMS coating acts as a binder and imparts high hydrophobicity and flame retardancy to the adsorbent. The soya chunk biochar (SCB) powder imparts microscopic/nanoscopic roughness to the skeletal structures of the pristine PU sponge, thereby increasing the overall hydrophobicity and adsorption capacity of the material. The superhydrophobic MTMS-C-PU, with a water contact angle of 160.2° ± 1.4°, exhibited good adsorption capacity in the range of 44-75 times its own mass for various oils and organic solvents, and can be recycled up to 20 times. MTMS-C-PU can be used for separating oil from oil-water mixtures and can be used for demulsifying oil in water-type emulsions very effectively. Biochar, a photothermally active additive, makes the MTMS-C-PU a photothermal adsorbent.
