Improvement in Stretch Flangeability of DP 980 Steel by Selective Edge Heat Treatment

Advanced high-strength steels (AHSS) such as dual-phase (DP) steels typically exhibit lower stretch flangeability and are prone to edge cracking during stamping operations. Stretch flangeability is usually expressed in terms of hole expansion ratio (HER) obtained from hole expansion testing. In this study, the influence of modification of the hole edges by selective heat treatment using a micro-plasma torch on the HER was investigated. Different heat inputs were used to locally vary the microstructure of the hole edge. The thermal profile at the hole edge and the resulting microstructure and hardness were evaluated. The HER values were obtained for the as-received and micro-plasma treated conditions. It is observed that HER can be modified by appropriate heat inputs. A heat input of 44 J/mm improved the HER to 40% from 32% in the as-received condition.
