Improvement in Surface Roughness of Selective Laser Melted Hastelloy X Using Electropolishing and Vibration Tumbling

In this study, the electropolishing process, vibration tumbling with sphere ceramic media, and vibration tumbling with SiC media were used to improve the surface roughness of Hastelloy X samples made by the selective laser melting method. The difference between these two methods of vibration tumbling is the media used in this article. The CBQ3 spherical media is used in vibration tumbling with ceramic media, and the three-sided prism SiC media of the brand C.T.L is employed in vibration tumbling with SiC media. Based on the results, after 240 s of electropolishing, the maximum reduction roughness (∆Ra) for the sloping face is 23.9 µm. Also, after 240 s of the electropolishing process, the most ∆Ra of the side face is 15.8 µm. In the process of vibration tumbling with sphere ceramic media, the highest ∆Ra for the sloping face and side face correspond to the sample that is tumbling for 24 h and, respectively, are 18.3 and 11.4 µm. In the process of vibration tumbling with SiC media, the highest ∆Ra for the sloping face and side face corresponds to the duration of 4 h of vibration tumbling, respectively, 31.8 and 18 µm. By comparing vibration tumbling with sphere ceramic media and vibration tumbling with SiC media, it can be concluded that SiC media is more effective because the surface roughness has decreased more in less time.
