Multi-scale Perspectives on Physical and Computational Estimates of Turbulent Flow in Gas-Stirred Ladles

Velocity and turbulence measurements in reduced scale physical models of gas-stirred ladles are compared against numerical predictions, to assess general state of accuracy. Significant overlap is observed between mechanisms of lateral dispersion of the plume. In the smallest system, radial velocity is suppressed due to constrained recirculation, inhibiting the efficiency of velocity measurement through laser Doppler velocimetry and introducing uncertainty to the estimates of turbulence which are necessary to discern the role of various active mechanisms.
