摘要

This paper provides an overview of education for sustainable development (ESD) in Japan based on a systematic literature review. Sustainable development is a global guiding principle, which is interpreted differently in different national contexts. Against this background, the question is asked to what extent ESD is addressed in Japan. A systematic literature review of a total of 564 Japanese articles is used to describe (1) how ESD is conceptualised in Japan, (2) that an environmental orientation prevails over economic and social dimensions, (3) that the discourse is closely linked to the UN Decade and (4) that adaptive Japan-specific considerations are significant.
