<p>This paper discusses changes in the understanding of actuality as one dimension of quality in journalism at the backdrop of demands for a&#xa0;future oriented journalism. It describes the meaning of actuality and its relation to other dimensions of quality in journalism, in particular the relevance of news, highlighting the function of actuality to create an immediate societal attention for relevant topics. It describes current dynamics of change in society in general and journalism in particular to figure out what creating immediate societal attentions means regarding future scenarios. The paper refers to the term of time regimes to describe future as a&#xa0;political space with a&#xa0;fierce competition of different future scenarios. Under this circumstances it depends on journalism’s foresight capability to which extent it can meet societal demands regarding its actuality. Finally, the paper proposes to use sociotechnical imaginaries as analytical framework for empirical research of future oriented journalism.</p>
