摘要

This article in the journal Gruppe.Interaktion.Organisation (GIO) identifies the typical characteristics of the school system and demonstrates how these traits distinguish school from other societal institutions. The main characteristics of schools are described based on a theoretical framework of school occupational theory and a grammar of schooling. The article outlines school as a sphere of action for pedagogical professionalism, characterised by contradictions and dilemmas. This gives rise to divergent coping strategies such as the Autonomy-Parity-Pattern. These characteristics have wide-ranging consequences for working and learning conditions, shaping the professionalisation of teachers and the development possibilities of schools. Empirical studies show that some of these specific characteristics still exist, although in different forms. At the same time, modernisation efforts, such as data-based management, are attempting to undermine these deeply rooted characteristics. Consequently, the field of action in schools is characterised by both consistency and change. Although recurring patterns can be identified, some context-specific heterogeneities can also be observed. Individual schools and classrooms may interpret the characteristics of the field of action differently, adopting a more conservative or more reform-oriented approach. For school administrators, dedicated teachers and school development consultants, it is crucial to have fundamental knowledge of the traditional characteristics of the school environment in order to avoid resistance in school development processes. At the same time, school development requires a critical, investigative approach that examines what is typical for a given location and develops it further. Such attitudes are central to the concepts of consulting and qualification for managers and teachers.
