Potential evidence of induced seismicity in north-western Algeria (late nineteenth–early twentieth century) from historical journalistic sources

The seismic activity in Algeria is controlled by the active tectonic regime associated with the Africa–Eurasia convergence. This seismicity, predominantly concentrated in the northern part of the country, ranges from moderate to strong. In this study, we investigate the potential anthropogenic contribution to seismic activity in the western part of Algeria over the period 1888–1934 when Algeria was under French rule. Our approach involves a systematic analysis of historical journalistic sources to identify seismic events potentially induced by human activities. The results reveal 14 earthquakes that may be associated with oil extraction, including 12 previously unreported events, which are documented here for the first time and will be integrated into the Algerian Macroseismic Database of Harbi et al. (2015). Furthermore, we analyse the seismicity that followed the filling of the Oued Fodda reservoir in late 1932, culminating in a destructive earthquake in the Carnot region on 9 September 1934. Local seismic events continued to be reported in the vicinity of the dam until 1969. While tectonic processes remain the primary driver of seismic activity, the spatial and temporal correlations observed in this study support the hypothesis of induced seismicity related to oil extraction and reservoir filling in the region.
