Exploring Well-Being Among Older Migrants: Empirical Challenges in Research Design and Data Collection

摘要

Previous studies at the intersection of international migration and aging indicate a significant variation in the well-being of older migrants due to their diverse migration backgrounds. For instance, first-generation migrants who retire often face multiple vulnerabilities, including poor health conditions and low socioeconomic status, also resulting in social isolation and loneliness. In contrast, lifestyle migrants, who become mobile only after retiring, are generally considered to have an active lifestyle with necessary resources. However, while there is a range of well-being outcomes depending on the group of interest, there is relatively little research on the challenges associated with conducting empirical studies using both qualitative and quantitative methods and methodologies with this heterogeneous group. This article aims to address this gap by providing a conceptual overview of the existing literature on older migrants and identifying the primary empirical challenges encountered during the research design and collection phases. Building on a thorough engagement with the key works in the field, the article synthesizes notable examples to illustrate these challenges.
