<p>Two new earth tongues species, <i>Geoglossum calciphilum</i>, originating from an old chalk quarry, and <i>G. verkinii</i>, from a bank of an old carriage road, are described from Slovakia, Central Europe. Ascocarps of both species are relatively small, black, and characterized by a scaly stipe. These new species were identified based on unique morphological traits and molecular phylogenetic analyses of DNA sequences (ITS and LSU regions). <i>Geoglossum calciphilum</i> is characterized by 7-septate ascospores; however, a small fraction of ascospores (at least one) in each ascus is regularly 3-septate. Phylogenetically, <i>G. calciphilum</i> is closely related to representatives of <i>G. vleugelianum</i>, <i>G. dunense</i>, and <i>G. inflatum</i> of European Mediterranean origin. <i>Geoglossum verkinii</i> shows a phylogenetic relationship with <i>G. chamaecyparinum</i> from Spain. However, it belongs to the group of <i>Geoglossum</i> species with 15-septate ascospores and morphologically resembles <i>G. pygmaeum</i>, a species described from the USA. The morphology of both newly described species is compared with those of similar taxa and differences are highlighted and discussed.</p>
