Novel lineages of fungicolous Cordieritidaceae (Helotiales, Leotiomycetes) from southwest China

Cordieritidaceae is an old but recently revived family with diverse lifestyles on a wide range of hosts, including lichens, fungi, decaying wood, and stems. Based on morphology and molecular phylogenetic evidence derived from a combined analysis of the nuclear large subunit ribosomal DNA (LSU), the internal transcribed spacer region (ITS), and the nuclear small subunit ribosomal DNA (SSU), this paper revealed the polyphyletic nature of the genus Unguiculariopsis and described two new species from southwest China: Cordierites xizangensis and Unguiculariopsis subravenelii. Cordierites xizangensis has synnema-like conidiomata and holoblastic conidiogenous cells, comprising the first report of an asexual morph in this genus, but no teleomorph is known so far. The genetic distances of C. xizangensis from other known species in Cordierites are big enough for recognizing it as a different species. Unguiculariopsis subravenelii shares a similar morphology with U. ravenelii, but it can be separated with molecular data. In addition, two new combinations, Ameghiniella frondosa (for Ionomidotis frondosa) and Unguiculariopsis globosa (for Unguiculella globosa), were proposed.
