<p>The genus <i>Cadophora</i> was established in 1927 as a dematiaceous asexual taxon characterized by solitary phialides with distinct collarettes. Today, phylogenetic analyses suggested that members of <i>Cadophora</i> belong to the <i>Ploettnerulaceae</i> (<i>Helotiales</i>, Ascomycetes). However, the sexual stage is unknown except for a few species. <i>Cadophora fallopiae</i>, occurring on overwintered stems of <i>Reynoutria japonica</i> and <i>R. sachalinensis</i> in Europe, was based only on its conidiomatous asexual stage. In Japan, <i>C. fallopiae</i>-like conidiomata were now discovered associating apothecia of <i>Pyrenopeziza</i> sp. on the same hosts. Therefore, conspecificity of apothecia and conidiomata was suspected. A detailed comparison of morphology and ITS-5.8S sequences confirmed that this fungus is identical to <i>C. fallopiae</i> known in Europe, and an emendation of the species <i>C. fallopiae</i> was proposed to include sexual stage based on a holomorphic specimen in Japan. Based on the genetic diversity of single ascosporous isolates derived from a single apothecium, we hypothesize that the lack of a compatible mating type might be the reason why the sexual stage does not occur in Europe.</p>

Emendation of the description of Cadophora fallopiae from Reynoutria spp. in Japan based on a holomorphic specimen
