Background and objective <p>Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is associated with an increased need for medical care. Particularly in rural regions such as Lusatia, where there are gaps in local care, digital applications can be a&#xa0;helpful addition to the medical care of chronically ill patients. During this study, we analysed whether COPD patients living in Lusatia see a&#xa0;need for COPD health apps in addition to their existing care and under what conditions they would use them.</p> Methods <p>One focus group and three double interviews were conducted in Lusatia in the summer of 2024. The study involved 12&#xa0;COPD patients living in Cottbus, Senftenberg, or Welzow and the surrounding area. The discussions were analysed qualitatively using a&#xa0;deductive-inductive approach.</p> Results <p>The participants had not used a&#xa0;COPD health app so far. However, some expressed openness to using one in the future. The participants did not specifically state that they saw a&#xa0;need for COPD health apps, but the wish for a&#xa0;solution to the shortage of doctors was expressed. It was particularly important to the participants that physicians be involved in the app and that communication with physicians be possible. They also expressed the desire for a&#xa0;competent contact person in the app to answer questions and who can be contacted in emergencies.</p> Conclusion <p>A&#xa0;COPD health app could meet the needs of the participants. However, it is still unclear what incentives are needed for pulmonologists in particular to participate in a&#xa0;COPD health app and what concerns they may have.</p>

Methods

Results
