摘要

Background

Mental health literacy (MHL) is defined as the knowledge, beliefs, and skills related to mental health and mental illness that support their prevention, recognition, and treatment. In light of the rising prevalence of mental health challenges among children and adolescents, the development of MHL has emerged as a pivotal area of concern, serving as a foundational element in the enhancement of mental wellbeing.

Methods

A significant body of research has emerged in recent years, particularly from 2019 to 2024, exploring various aspects of MHL in children and adolescents. These studies have focused on three primary domains: the measurement of MHL (1), its manifestations (2), and the role of school support (3). This narrative review provides a synopsis of the findings from the aforementioned studies, which have been categorized according to three primary themes.

Results

The review identified a substantial number of instruments for measuring MHL in children and adolescents, characterized by considerable heterogeneity in terms of conceptual foundations and target groups. Findings on the development of MHL in adolescents are challenging to compare, yet underscore the necessity of promoting MHL in this demographic. School-based interventions have the potential to positively impact MHL.

Conclusion

This review elucidates the necessity of further developing the conceptualization of MHL for children and adolescents while recognizing the heterogeneity within this age group when defining, measuring, and developing educational interventions.
