Background <p>Physical inactivity is a&#xa0;key public health problem which can be counteracted by designing physical activity-friendly environments. Especially the concepts of walkability and bikeability can contribute to an increase of daily physical activity. This article provides an overview of existing questionnaires that can be used to subjectively measure walkability and/or bikeability.</p> Methods <p>A&#xa0;comprehensive search was conducted across five literature databases, three websites, and through additional manual searches to identify scales. Identified scales were subsequently evaluated against five criteria to access their compliance with scientific standards.</p> Results <p>A&#xa0;total of nine questionnaires were identified. Two of these questionnaires are available in German, while another two addresses either the concept of walkability or bikeability.</p> Conclusion <p>This article provides an overview and supports the selection of questionnaires for the measurement of walkability and/or bikeability from a&#xa0;subjective perspective. At the same time, it shows that there is a&#xa0;lack of questionnaires that meet scientific standards, especially in German-speaking countries.</p>

Background

Physical inactivity is a key public health problem which can be counteracted by designing physical activity-friendly environments. Especially the concepts of walkability and bikeability can contribute to an increase of daily physical activity. This article provides an overview of existing questionnaires that can be used to subjectively measure walkability and/or bikeability.

Methods

A comprehensive search was conducted across five literature databases, three websites, and through additional manual searches to identify scales. Identified scales were subsequently evaluated against five criteria to access their compliance with scientific standards.

Results

A total of nine questionnaires were identified. Two of these questionnaires are available in German, while another two addresses either the concept of walkability or bikeability.

Conclusion

This article provides an overview and supports the selection of questionnaires for the measurement of walkability and/or bikeability from a subjective perspective. At the same time, it shows that there is a lack of questionnaires that meet scientific standards, especially in German-speaking countries.
