Background <p>In Germany, around 8 million people have been diagnosed with diabetes, which is why the potential of smartwatches could help facilitate self-management. In this context, the attitude of patients with diabetes mellitus regarding the implementation and thus the use of smartwatches for blood glucose monitoring is important. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess whether patients with diabetes mellitus can imagine monitoring their blood glucose levels with a smartwatch and what opportunities and barriers exist across different age groups.</p> Methods <p>The questionnaire-based cross-sectional study included patients with type&#xa0;1 and type&#xa0;2 diabetes mellitus who were interviewed in a&#xa0;representative sample. The online questionnaire comprised 24&#xa0;closed questions and was distributed via public networks. The primary analysis analyzed descriptively which barriers were perceived as particularly significant by the participants. Furthermore, it was descriptively analyzed whether the possibility of measuring blood glucose with a&#xa0;smartwatch is perceived as an opportunity. The secondary analysis analyzed whether there is a&#xa0;correlation between gender, age, level of education, and field of work.</p> Results <p>The results showed that all age groups were generally in favor of and would use smartwatches for blood glucose monitoring. Some of the patients already use a&#xa0;more modern measurement method to measure their blood glucose. The biggest concerns in the context of implementation were measurement errors and acquisition costs, with older patients also seeing a&#xa0;lack of knowledge about operation and a&#xa0;lack of education as obstacles. The cost of purchasing a&#xa0;smartwatch is seen as less relevant by all age groups and a&#xa0;large proportion of patients have already taken part in diabetes training. They are also confident that their physician is familiar with the new measurement methods.</p> Conclusion <p>Smartwatches offer promising potential to support diabetes management. Successful implementation depends on patient education and the willingness of healthcare providers to adopt new technologies. To ensure safe and effective use, appropriate quality assurance and data protection standards must be met.</p>
