<p>This is an introductory paper to a special issue on <i>Multiple Exponence</i>. We aim to provide a comprehensive overview of empirical and theoretical aspects of the study of this phenomenon by identifying its potential causes, methods of empirical study, and the most recent formal approaches. We highlight various diachronic, synchronic, and language acquisition facets of multiple exponence, showing where we are in its study and where we feel we are going. Throughout, we reference the literature as well as the papers of this special issue.</p>
