Retirement Shock and Subjective Social Status of Urban Women in China
摘要
In China, gender-differentiated retirement policy may have an inequitable impact. By utilizing the 2010 and 2015 waves of the China General Social Survey data and applying fuzzy regression discontinuity design, we find that retirement reduces the subjective social status of women in urban China, while it has less effect on the male group. This result remains robust after a series of tests. The impact of retirement is more pronounced among women who have less formal education, rely on conventional media sources, possess limited social capital, and do not own property. Further analysis shows that retirement also reduces the sense of social justice and raises the sense of class conflict for females. The results provide some insights into the implementation of the delayed retirement policy.
