A Study of PYD Program-Based Interventions for Problematic Behaviors of Adolescents in Relocated Communities for Poverty Alleviation in Mainland China
摘要
In mainland China, adolescents relocated under the poverty alleviation program face unique challenges in transitioning from rural to urban settings and from traditional to modern environments, posing a risk of social maladaptation. Previous studies have shown that social maladjustment is closely related to adolescents' problematic behaviors, and adolescents' positive development ability is the protective factor of problem behaviors. The positive youth development(PYD) model is beginning to be gradually applied to the intervention of adolescent problematic behaviors. This study was conducted to explore the effectiveness of PYD intervention on problematic behaviors by providing a PYD program to 199 adolescents in a Nujiang relocated community for poverty alleviation. We employ a single group pre-test and post-test design to evaluate changes in the problematic behaviors of our service recipients, and utilize qualitative methods consisting of semi-structured interviews and participatory observation to assess their satisfaction with the PYD program. The preliminary results show that the problematic behavior of the service object has been significantly improved, and the reduction of bullying victimization also helps explain the intervention effect. Qualitative evaluation results also demonstrate the service recipients' satisfaction with the PYD courses. This provides some evidence for us to carry out PYD program in the relocation communities of poverty alleviation in mainland China to prevent and improve adolescent problematic behaviors. Simultaneously, the research outcomes underscore the necessity for localizing the PYD program, which can enhance its adaptability and acceptability, ultimately boosting the intervention's success.
