The Effectiveness of Psychological Interventions on Digital Addiction among Children and Adolescents: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

With the advancement of technology, digital addiction is increasingly recognized as a global public health concern, particularly among children and adolescents. As a key strategy to improve mental health, the role of psychological interventions in addressing digital addiction needs further exploration. International databases (APA PsycINFO, PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus) were comprehensively searched from inception through February 24th, 2026. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing psychological interventions to control groups for adolescents with digital addiction were included. 21 RCTs investigating the psychological intervention on adolescent different types of digital addiction were included. The overall moderate effectiveness of the psychological intervention was found to reduce the severity of digital addiction, with high heterogeneity. Subgroup analysis was conducted to investigate the differences in the country and cultural contexts, intervention types and recruitment settings. Psychological interventions show promising effectiveness in reducing the severity of different types of digital addiction, offering potential strategies for preventing digital addiction in children and adolescents.
