<p>Psychiatric wards pose significant challenges to inpatients, particularly those with substance use disorders, often lacking nature access and meaningful activities, which can exacerbate cravings and withdrawal symptoms. In a pilot study with 34 participants with substance use disorders using Oculus Quest 2 and Nature Treks software, we assessed VR-based nature exposure’s impact on mood and anxiety. Post-VR, anxiety, and negative mood decreased significantly, while positive mood increased. The VR intervention was highly usable with minimal adverse effects. Our findings suggest that VR-based nature exposure is feasible, well-accepted, and safe, highlighting its potential to enhance psychiatric care by addressing emotional and environmental challenges. This innovative approach could potentially be applied in the future to systematically improve the overall inpatient experience and treatment outcomes.</p>
