A Network Analysis of the Relationship between Dark Triad Traits and Social Media Addiction in Adults
摘要
In today’s digital age, social media addiction (SMA) is increasingly prevalent. Research indicates that personality traits may contribute to susceptibility to SMA. Among these, the Dark Triad (DT) traits, representing the darker side of personality, have attracted attention for their relationship with social media addiction (SMA). However, the trait-to-symptom association between DT traits and specific SMA symptoms remains unclear. In this study, we assessed DT traits and a range of SMA symptoms in 957 adults using the Dirty Dozen scale and the Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale (BSMAS), respectively. Employing network analysis, we identified specific pathways and central components connecting DT traits to SMA symptoms communities. These results revealed several pathways between DT traits and specific SMA symptoms (e.g., Machiavellianism-Conflict, Psychopathy-Conflict and Narcissism-Withdrawal). Notably, among DT traits, narcissism showed the highest positive bridge centrality, indicating its central influence in the network. These findings clarify the specific pathways between each DT trait and SMA symptom and highlight the critical bridge node—narcissism—that may be a promising target for the prevention and intervention of SMA.
