摘要

A new method for determining the depth D of penetration of the terahertz (THz) surface plasmon polariton (SPP) field into air has been elaborated and tested. Test experiments were performed on flat substrates containing either a bare layer of sputtered gold or gold coated with a dielectric layer (zinc sulfide) of subwavelength thickness d with application of the radiation (λ = 197 μm) from the Novosibirsk free electron laser (NovoFEL). It has been established that the method developed is effective only when the metal surface has a dielectric coating with d ≥ 1 µm. Within 5%, the obtained values of D agree with data obtained by the THz surface plasmon interferometry technique. An analytical procedure for reconstruction of the dielectric permittivity of the skin layer of metal engaging measured SPP propagation length and D values has been suggested.
