<p>Contracts for disease management programmes (DMPs) have been in place in Germany since 2003. DMPs are designed to improve the quality of treatment for people with statutory health insurance and chronic illnesses on the basis of specified quality targets. Participation is voluntary for both physicians and patients, but requires continuous examinations and documentation on the part of the physician, as well as regular participation on the part of the patient and, if necessary, attendance at DMP-specific training courses. Practices receive regular feedback on the results achieved in terms of quality targets and can compare their own results with those achieved in all practices. By the end of 2025, around 7.7&#xa0;million people in Germany had been treated in at least one DMP, 4.8&#xa0;million of them in the largest DMP for type&#xa0;2 diabetes alone. In recent years, the number of people receiving care in DMPs has risen significantly.</p>
